Edmund Aloysius Czopek

Born October 16, 1922 and died on August 24, 2011. Born in Delray (Detroit) into a family of 10. At the outbreak of WWII he joined the Army as an enlisted soldier and left as a First Lieutenant. He married, had four sons and worked with his brother Frank at Czopek Funeral Directors. Between family life and work were several memorable cross-country family trips. The first was to the New England States and in later years the West. In 1967 he drove solo to Alaska, through Canada via the northern portion of the Pan-American Highway. Several years later he explored the southern portion of the same road - through Mexico to Panama. He rebuilt a 1961 Ford Falcon station wagon (decorated with colorful flower power appliques), then sold it in Panama to pay for his trip home. Along the way he ran into a GRIT newspaper reporter who wrote a story on the Meandering Mortician. His later journeys involved a new friend Rita Gutowski. Ed's final adventure was writing a collection of short stories about his experiences. He was writing his first book when he became ill and was hospitalized. His four sons survive him: Chris (Bonnie) Czopek of Lansing, Greg (Martha) Czopek of Long Beach, CA., Frank Czopek (Jeannine Bowman) of Long Beach, CA., and Pete Czopek of Lincoln Park. He will be missed by grandsons Scott Czopek (Boulder, CO) and John Czopek (Berkley, CA). Memorial Visitation Wednesday 12-4pm at Czopek.
